Neighborhood History

West Garfield Park grew up around Garfield Park, originally called Central Park when it opened in 1874 and renamed in 1881 to honor assassinated President James Garfield. Settlement in the surrounding neighborhood began in the 1840s along a plank road on Lake Street, and the area reached residential maturity by 1919 with a large Irish population centered around the St. Mel's parish complex on Washington Boulevard.

The neighborhood is home to the Garfield Park Conservatory, designed in 1906-07 by Jens Jensen and Prairie School architects Schmidt, Garden and Martin as what was intended to be the largest publicly owned conservatory under one roof in the world. The Tilton School, an architectural landmark designed by Dwight Perkins, and the 1920 Henry E. Legler Regional Library remain community fixtures.
