Neighborhood History

West Lawn remained marshy and largely unsettled through the 19th century while its neighbor Chicago Lawn developed to the east across the dividing Grand Trunk Railroad tracks. Growth finally came after 1915, as industrial development in nearby Clearing and the expansion of Chicago Municipal Airport, later renamed Midway, drew German, Irish, Czech, Italian, Polish, and Lithuanian families to build homes on the reclaimed land.

The neighborhood is home to the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, founded in 1966 by Lithuanian-American businessman and World War II veteran Stanley Balzekas Jr. and now the largest museum of its kind in the United States. The Ford City Shopping Center, opened in 1965 on the site of a former Ford aircraft engine plant, remains a commercial anchor for the community.
