West Oakland is one of the Bay Area's most historically significant neighborhoods — a community whose identity was shaped by the transcontinental railroad terminus established here in 1869, making it the Pacific gateway for the nation's first continental rail connection. The neighborhood became a center of African American community life from the Great Migration onward, as Black Americans from the South arrived in the East Bay between 1940 and 1970 in search of industrial employment at the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond and the Oakland Naval Supply Center. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters — the first major African American labor union, organized by A. Philip Randolph in 1925 — had its West Coast headquarters in West Oakland, whose Pullman porter community was among the most influential Black professional communities on the West Coast in the mid-20th century. The 16th Street Train Station — the Beaux-Arts civic monument completed in 1912 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places — stands as the neighborhood's most iconic architectural landmark, currently undergoing restoration. DeFremery Park on Adeline Street provides the primary community green space and gathering anchor.
