Neighborhood History

West Pullman was first developed in the 1880s by the West Pullman Land Association, real estate speculators who built factories and housing between Wentworth and Ashland Avenues for workers seeking an escape from George Pullman's strictly controlled company town next door. The Association thrived until the Panic of 1893 and the Pullman Strike of 1894 drove it into bankruptcy, but the neighborhood's oldest component, Kensington, had already been founded in 1852 at the junction of the Illinois Central and Michigan Central railroads.

Nicknamed "Bumtown" for the commercial district that catered to residents of the neighboring dry town of Pullman, Kensington anchored the area's identity for decades. Today the neighborhood is also home to one of the largest urban photovoltaic solar plants in the United States, a 39-acre, 32,800-panel facility capable of powering roughly 1,500 homes.

For anyone whose family worked these rail yards and factories, MY-NHD's West Pullman tee is a way to carry that industrial history with you.
