Neighborhood History

West Ridge takes its name from the glacial ridge that gave the area its earliest identity, settled by German and Luxembourger farmers in the 1830s and 1840s who grew cabbage on truck farms shipped by rail into downtown Chicago. A dispute over park district taxes with neighboring Rogers Park, remembered locally as the "Cabbage War," led West Ridge's farmers to incorporate as their own village in 1890, three years before Chicago annexed both communities in 1893.

The completion of the North Shore Channel in 1910 spurred a brickyard boom that drew German and Scandinavian workers, and a post-World War I building boom filled the area with the Chicago bungalows that still define the Rogers Park Manor Bungalow Historic District. Indian Boundary Park, established in 1922 along the historic 1816 treaty line, remains one of the neighborhood's oldest civic landmarks.

For anyone whose family farmed this ridge before the streets were paved, MY-NHD's West Ridge tee is a way to carry that history with you.
