Neighborhood History

West Town grew into the most populous of Chicago's community areas by the mid-20th century, its identity shaped by the Polish immigrants who settled around Polonia Triangle after St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish was founded in 1867, followed by Holy Trinity Polish Mission in 1872. Together the two churches formed the largest parish in the world, with a combined membership exceeding 60,000 in the early 1900s, earning the surrounding blocks the name Polish Downtown and status as the functional capital of American Polonia.

Pulaski Park, built in 1912 with a fieldhouse designed by architect William Carbys Zimmerman to evoke Eastern European architecture, remains a civic anchor for the neighborhood today. The area also served as the political base for longtime Congressman Dan Rostenkowski, whose family still owns the building across from St. Stanislaus Kostka.
