Westlake is a West Oakland neighborhood developed circa 1945 as part of the postwar housing expansion that brought modest single-family homes and community infrastructure to the flatland blocks between downtown Oakland and the West Oakland industrial corridor. The neighborhood's streets were built to house the working families of postwar Oakland, many of them African American households who settled West Oakland during and after the Great Migration — the decades-long movement of Black Americans from the South to Northern and Western industrial cities that brought an estimated 300,000 people to the Bay Area between 1940 and 1970. The West Oakland Branch of the Oakland Public Library on 18th Street serves as the neighborhood's primary civic anchor, providing community access to education, resources, and programming across generations of residents. Westlake Middle School — an Oakland Unified School District campus — has served as the neighborhood's primary educational institution and a center of community life. DeFremery Park, one of West Oakland's most significant community green spaces, lies to the north along Adeline Street. That working-class foundation, anchored by community institutions and shaped by one of American history's great demographic movements, is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Westlake collection.
