Neighborhood History

Wicker Park takes its name from Charles and Joel Wicker, brothers who purchased 80 acres along Milwaukee Avenue in 1870 and donated four acres to the city for the triangular park that still bears their name. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 drove the neighborhood's first building boom, and by the century's end wealthy German brewers had built mansions along Hoyne Avenue in a stretch so lined with beer money that Chicagoans nicknamed it Beer Baron Row.

As Polish immigration surged in the 1890s and 1900s, the area around the park became known as the Polish Gold Coast, and the Wicker Park Historic District earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 before the city designated much of the neighborhood a Chicago Landmark District in 1991. A bronze statue of Charles Wicker, sculpted by his own great-granddaughter, still stands in the park today.

For anyone who has walked past those Victorian mansions on Hoyne Avenue, MY-NHD's Wicker Park tee is a way to carry that history with you.
