Neighborhood History

Wildwood takes its name from its heavily wooded terrain, once Potawatomi hunting ground before it was folded into the Forest Glen community area on Chicago's far Northwest Side. The neighborhood's rustic character, curb-less streets, and towering trees set it apart from Chicago's typical street grid, giving it a suburban feel unlike almost anywhere else within city limits.

The Chicago Park District acquired vacant land here between 1949 and 1950 as part of a ten-year initiative to serve the postwar population boom, officially naming Wildwood Park in 1953 alongside the adjacent Wildwood Elementary School. Both take their name from nearby Wildwood Avenue, and the park's fieldhouse today serves as an informal hall of fame for generations of neighborhood children who grew up playing there.

For anyone who grew up under Wildwood's towering trees, MY-NHD's Wildwood tee is a way to carry that close-knit history with you.
