Neighborhood History
Neighborhood History
Wrightwood emerged as the easternmost of Greater Ashburn's three historic parish territories, organized for generations around St. Thomas More Parish, whose boundaries shaped where children went to school and where community identity took root long before official neighborhood names mattered. When racial change came to the Southwest Side in the 1970s and 1980s, Wrightwood became the first section of Ashburn to integrate, emerging as a predominantly African-American middle-class community even as neighboring Scottsdale remained largely white.
A 2017 WBEZ analysis found Ashburn, anchored by Wrightwood, to be the only Chicago community with a dominant middle-class Black population that continued adding Black residents between 2000 and 2010, a period when many Black Chicagoans were leaving the city. The Wrightwood Metra station, serving the SouthWest Service line, remains a commuter anchor for the neighborhood today.
For anyone whose family helped integrate this South Side community, MY-NHD's Wrightwood tee is a way to carry that pioneering history with you.
